Well, this guy was an example through and through of a person who was direct in all areas of his life, including with women. Lemmy didn't let anyone tell him how to live his life; he lived it on his own terms with the 'fuck it' attitude of not caring what anyone thought about him or the way he lived.
I don't have many 'heroes', and I'm certainly not usually one to put people on a pedestal, however there are certain people in my life that I've found myself drawn towards who have inspired me to be more authentic and live life to the full, and Lemmy is one of those people.
Sometimes when I've been going through challenges in life, I've asked myself 'what would Lemmy do?' (in this situation), and I've found the answer straight away.
Of course, if you're a fan of rock and metal, you'll know that Lemmy (and his band Motorhead) was one of the best, most influential and respected musicians in that genre. But even if you're not a fan of the music, you can still learn a lot from his wisdom and the way he lived his life. His character, attitude and lifestyle drew as many people to him as his music. Let's look at what we can learn from the way this man lived his life.
Lemmy was a real man who oozed masculinity
If you want an example of a true man, Lemmy was the real deal. He looked and acted masculine, was never phased by adversity, and was never a pussy. He had backbone, strength of character, was strong minded and had the aura of masculinity about him. True masculinity is lacking in this day and age, with too many men acting and looking feminine and metro-sexual. In Lemmy's words, 'This entire generation seems to have become pussies, you know'.
Lemmy's direct attitude to life
Lemmy walked his own path through life and didn't want to conform to society's, or anyone else's, view of how he should live his life. He stuck to his own unique path and never allowed anyone to make him veer off it, he dressed and styled himself how he wanted to and never followed trends or fads.
He was a totally authentic person, 100% true to himself and his vision, without apologising for it. That's the direct attitude to life.
Lemmy's direct communication style
Lemmy was very direct in his communication style - he spoke his mind and told it as it was, never afraid to call a spade a spade, never one to hold back on his opinions about people or different aspects of life. He was a shining example of radical honesty in action. If you asked him a question, you got a straight answer, whether you liked the answer or not. He was a no bullshit, no nonsense person who didn't suffer fools gladly.
Lemmy's direct approach to women
Lemmy was also very direct with women. He was not a fan of monogamy or marriage and as a result never settled down with any one woman, instead preferring to have lots of no strings sex with tons of women. He was reputed to have bedded more than 1000 women in his lifetime. He was very tuned into his sexuality and was open and honest about his love of women and sex, never feeling the need to hide his sexual side.
To top that off, Lemmy was not good looking, in fact you could say he was pretty ugly considering he had warts on his face etc. But that didn't stop him from being very successful with women. Women loved his direct approach to them - there is an article in a UK newspaper recently from Coleen Nolan, who said she met Lemmy in the 80s. In her own words:
'I remember how much he loved women and big boobs. He was certainly fascinated with mine. He used to say: “Great t*ts!” but he was never being lecherous, he was just saying: “Be proud of yourself”. It wasn’t creepy, Lemmy actually made me feel good about being a woman'.
(That should shut up the idiots who claim that it's 'creepy' or 'inappropriate' to be direct and to use sexual talk with women. The opposite is actually true).
Despite his gruff, 'rough and ready' exterior, Lemmy was a very intelligent, articulate and well read man. He was very wise and in my opinion he was a modern day philosopher and always dropped some interesting pearls of wisdom into his interviews. I'd like to share some of his best quotes about women, sex and relationships...
On his direct attitude to women: 'There are only two kinds of women in the world - women who you want to fuck and succeed, and women who you don’t want to. The best women are the ones who want to fuck you, and the worst are the ones who don’t. It’s easy, really'
On his liking of good looking women: 'I can't help being a guy, I like things guys like. Fuck off! We like girls with tits! I didn't ask for women to have tits, but if they've got them I'm gonna look at them. Hey, too bad!'
On relationships and avoiding commitment: 'People just rip each other to shreds over the years. Nothing is more fatal to a relationship than commitment'
'Nothing changes a relationship like commitment. If you move in with someone, you lose all respect for them." How so? "All them dirty knickers on the towel rail, all that snorting and farting. Does that appeal to you? Because it doesn't to me. When you first start dating someone, it's all about being on your best behaviour, and that initial magic. I never wanted the magic to stop'
'To have a relationship is fatal to the relationship'
On being asked why he never settled down with one woman: 'I've never met one woman who could stop me looking at all the rest!'.
'Variety is the spice of life, and that includes women'
On marriage (and why he didn't get married): 'I don’t know any happily married couples, not even my parents'
On falling in love: 'Falling in love is terrible. It makes you act foolish, like an idiot. You sign your life over when you fall in love, and it's awful, it's torture. You end up walking past their house at night and looking up longingly at their window... Who wants to live like that?'
On women not caring about a guy's looks: 'It's not so much looks. Chicks don't give a fuck about handsome in the final analysis. It's because they take the makeup off every day, and they know how deep handsome is'.
'Women don’t look at a lot of the things that we comb so carefully and fit so tightly. They like personality and if a guy gets them emotionally. It all depends what you say'
On the unpredictability of women: 'You can never learn about women because they’ll always give you a nasty shock, put it that way [laughs]. Just when you think you’ve got a bird sorted out she goes off to the left. They’re much more emotionally driven than we are'
On approaching women: 'Chasing women is a sport because you have to work at it if you want to catch them. They don’t just walk up to you'
On women seeing you with other women: 'If you take a girl to a party at least five other women – absolutely wonderful – will be looking at you across the room and brushing by you and everything'
On sex: 'People have forgotten that sex is fun. It's the most fun you can have without laughing. People have forgotten that. It's all deadly serious. AIDS. You can get gonorrhea from a blowjob. So what? That's the risk you have to take. If you're going to have sex, fuckin' have sex and be happy about it. Don't be looking over your shoulder all the time. It ruins everything'.
'I might put rock’n’roll first, but sex would be a very close second — rock’n’roll is only a means to get more sex'
And here are a few more....
